In the coming years, the Star Wars library on Disney+ will grow, thanks to a slew of live action shows. One of the most anticipated is a series about Ahsoka Tano, a character best known for the animated show The Clone Wars.
Ahsoka was brought into the live action world in The Mandalorian Chapter 13, The Jedi. If you want to know more about this series, read on. We also have similar raids for Andor Season 2 and Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2.
What is the release date for Ahsoka?
Ahsoka debuts on August 23, 2023. Watch the official teaser trailer below:
Who are the cast and crew?
Rosario Dawson will reprise her role as Ahsoka Tano from The Mandalorian. Originally voiced by Ashley Eckstein in Clone Wars and Rebels, Dawson has been generally well received so far.
She’s joined by Hayden Christensen, who reprises his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader (via The Hollywood Reporter). The two characters shared a bond in The Clone Wars, as Tano was Skywalker’s padawan.
Ahsoka will take place at the same time as The Mandalorian, five years after Return of the Jedi. Therefore, we expect Anakin to appear in the form of flashbacks or as a force ghost.
Christensen also played a big part in the Obi-Wan series – but this one takes place a lot earlier than Ahsoka.
Natasha Liu Bordizzo (best known from The Society) joins the cast as Sabine Wren, a young Mandalorian who dropped out of Imperial Academy.
Also, the star of Birds of Prey and the Netflix thriller Kate, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, will be part of the series – although her role is unconfirmed as of now. Another star of an unknown character is Ivanna Sakhno.
Making Star Wars reported rumors that LucasFilm was casting actresses to play Ahsoka at a younger age — perhaps her teens, which sparked some flashbacks around the time of The Clone Wars.
The Mandalorian’s Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will both serve as executive producers, while Filoni will also serve as the show’s writer. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Peter Ramsey – best known for Into the Spider-Verse – will direct at least one episode of Ahsoka.
The Radio Times has reported that Filoni has hinted that Mandalorian graffiti artist Sabine Wren of Star Wars Rebels may be joining her on her travels – although this is not yet official. He also teased the possibility of more Rebels crossover characters coming to The Wrap.
There have also been rumors about Ezra Bridger’s casting, but nothing concrete has been confirmed yet.
What is Ahsoka’s plot?
Plot details on Ahsoka are pretty thin at the moment, but we do know it will be set in the same period as The Mandalorian.
Ahsoka called the search for Grand Admiral Thrawn (AKA Mitth’raw’nuruodo), a villain probably best known from Rebels who disappeared along with Jedi-in-training, Ezra Bridger. Therefore, we suspect that Thrawn will be the main antagonist of the series and that Ezra will also play a central role in the story.
This is further backed up by C2E2’s Rosario Dawson, who claims they are trying to track down Thrawn.
We also imagine getting more details and backstory on Ahsoka’s time as a young apprentice to the former Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, and her subsequent battle with him as Darth Vader.
Ahsoka will reportedly be joining another new Star Wars show, Rangers of the New Republic. We also imagine that we haven’t seen the last of her and that her storyline overlaps with Mando’s.
Showrunner Dave Filoni reportedly saw a rough cut of an episode and reacted strongly to it:
