Billionaire MacKenzie Scott has awarded $1 million to a small, low-profile nonprofit in Colorado whose leaders remain a bit baffled.
“The whole thing was very surreal,” said Heather Tritten, executive director of Parent Possible, which supports early childhood services. “When I look at who else has been funded in Colorado — organizations much bigger than Parent Possible, it feels very surreal that we were funded by MacKenzie Scott and she wanted to invest in us.”
Founded in Colorado in 1991, Parent Possible works to equip parents with tools and education to prepare their children for learning. The nonprofit believes that investing in early childhood systems helps to increase literacy and encourage students to complete high school, helping to break the vicious cycle of poverty.
It serves some of Colorado’s poorest residents. According to the 2022 annual report, 87% of customer households earn less than twice the federal poverty line. That would be less than about $49,720 for a family of three this year.
