Youngkin’s 2021 campaign made a big bet on parental anger over education, and the strategy paid off. After trailing in the polls against Democrat Terry McAuliffe, he rallied late in the campaign to clinch a win by about 2 points.
Youngkin is also seen as a potential candidate to run for the 2024 Republican nomination for president, and Trump lashed out when the governor weighed whether to step in.
Republican presidential candidates have taken differing positions in response to Thursday’s news that Trump has been indicted on charges related to his handling of classified national security data. Some are taking a wait-and-see approach, while others — like Youngkin — have gone after the Justice Department, accusing prosecutors of political motives.
“Regardless of your side, this undermines confidence in our judicial system at the very time when we should be working to restore that confidence,” Youngkin tweeted.
