Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the Republicans of the House of Representatives pulled out of debt limit talks claiming the talks are unproductive.
“We’ve decided to hit pause, because it’s just not productive,” Graves told reporters at the Capitol as he left a meeting that started around 10 a.m. Friday. He was joined by the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Patrick McHenry (RNC).
A White House official acknowledged that a snag had emerged without indicating that either side had walked off the table: “There are real disagreements between the parties on budget issues and talks will be difficult. The president’s team is working hard on a reasonable bipartisan solution that can pass the House and Senate.”
It is unproductive, is code for the Democrats and the White House refuses to agree to the kind of cuts the Republicans are demanding of the House.
The script is reversed. Biden and the Democrats are at the negotiating table, while Republicans are endangering the US economy by walking out.
House Republicans were delusional if they actually believed the Democrats would agree to the cuts they demanded. It would never happen.
House Republicans could end this crisis tomorrow by passing a clean increase in the debt limit. The blame game of Biden and the Democrats has backfired.
