Well, it’s not quite an Elon Musk vs. Mark Zuckerberg cage match, but it’s the next best thing. Threads, Meta’s answer to Twitter, is out now and the platform is really starting to pick up steam. However, according to The protectorTwitter could end up suing Meta over Threads.
In case you don’t already know, Threads is the new social media platform that is basically Meta’s version of Twitter. It gives you the option to create text based posts. You can also repost posts from others. It’s a similar experience to Twitter. You can download the faucet here and sign up with your Instagram account.
Twitter could sue Meta over Threads
We all knew this was coming. While Elon Musk gets dragged for another change on Twitter, Meta comes and reveals another alternative for people to migrate to. Elon Musk’s lawyers weren’t too happy about that, as you can imagine.
At the moment there is no one in court. Meta got a threat of a lawsuit from Twitter, so we don’t know if Elon and his legal team will follow through.
What is the lawsuit about?
Intuition would tell you this is because Threads is so similar to Twitter. It’s a little deeper than that. Elon’s team could potentially sue Meta for misappropriation of trade secrets. Remember when Elon guillotined down half of the Twitter employees when he took over? Well, those employees had to go somewhere. We’re sure most of them went to other places, but there’s a chance some of them went to work for Meta.
Musk’s team alleges that Meta bragged employees, especially those in possession of Twitter trade secrets, to work on Threads. This wouldn’t be a distant accusation as Meta could spit this platform out in a matter of months.
However, it has not been confirmed that the former Twitter employees who went to Meta had any trade secrets. We have yet to see what evidence Musk’s team has.
If it turns out that the employees were in possession of trade secrets, this could cause a storm for almost all parties involved. Meta will be sued and take that financial hit. It may also be forced to make drastic changes to the platform
We can also exclude consequences for the employees who shared the secrets. They may face jail time as this is a legitimate crime.
It can also affect the users who have jumped to Threads. The experience may be very different after the change (if it is coming). This can have a negative impact on the platform. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen.
